Themiscyra, East of Delhi?
a.musementsSo, there are rumors that this may be the new face of Wonder Woman:
Her name is Priyanka Chopra, she hails from India, and she was Miss World 2000. And some sources are reporting that she’s “in negotiations” to star in Joss Whedon’s upcoming Wonder Woman movie. She has ties to Boston; seems she spent some of her high school years out thisaway, and in an interview last year, when her father was being treated for a tumor on his liver in Boston, said she comes here every year, and that her best friends are here. Which pretty much concludes my knowledge of the lovely Ms. Chopra.
I don’t know how well she can handle a lasso, but at least she’s got some experience wearing a tiara.

Why I Won’t Be Seeing Superman Returns In IMAX…
a.musements...at least, not on opening day.
QED. First time out, I want to see the whole movie. Technical limitations with IMAX equipment limit the running time of the films they can play, and a quick check of the listed running times for both my preferred Showcase (Revere) and IMAX (Reading) theaters shows the IMAX running time coming in at 9 minutes under the Showcase (148 minutes vs 157 minutes)… although I’ve been told by someone that he’s heard the IMAX version has had 34 minutes trimmed out.
So, tomorrow, opening day, I’ll be at the Showcase. Then (sometime next week, I expect), I’ll head out to the IMAX to check out the 3D sequences.
In any event… welcome back, Kal-El!

L.A., Seven-Mary-Three
a.musementsSo Wilmer Valderrama is “attached” to play Officer Francis “Ponch” Poncherello, the role that made Erik Estrada a household name in the late ‘70s, in the inevitable big-screen adaptation of CHiPs. The next big question is, who’ll play Ponch’s partner, Officer Jon Baker (originally played by Larry Wilcox)? ‘Cause, c’mon, if you absolutely must make a CHiPs movie (and apparently, someone must, because they’re doing it, so fuck it, I’m just gonna sit back and rubberneck the crash site), it’s gotta be Ponch and Jon. Steve McLeish and the Nelson brothers can be in it, sure… but Ponch and Jon must be front and center. Therefore, there must be a Jon. So, if Fez is playing Ponch, who’s gonna be Jon?
My short list? I’m thinking Ben McKenzie or Kevin Connolly could do decent jobs of playing Baker as straight man, with a touch of humor, or if they decide to go the full slapstick Starsky and Hutch route, Bret Harrison might work out.
Of course, this still leaves open the questions of who’ll play Sergeant Getraer, Barry Baricza, Artie Grossman, Sindy Cahill, Bonnie Clark, Jeb Turner, and of course, Harlan Arliss? Any suggestions?

Again, I Am Amused
a.musementsJust when I thought it’d be a while before someone topped Verizon’s “field meeting” tv spot (the one where the nebbishy guy meets a thug type in a muddy field, and the thug’s impressed to learn the nebbish gets cell service out there in the boonies) in sheer entertainment value (as measured on my personal giggleometer), I come across Sprint’s “crime deterrent” ad. (Apparently, the spot debuted during the Super Bowl, but I just saw it for the first time a couple of days ago.)

Niven Was Right About Heinlein Being Right
a.musements, generalitiesIt’s looking like I won’t need that dual-tuner TiVo, after all. The CW, (bastard child of UPN and The WB) won’t be announcing their schedule until Thursday, but one source after another is reporting that apparently it’s all over but the shouting for Everwood, while 7th Heaven — despite airing its friggin’ SERIES FINALE last week.. oh, and being utter drek for eight years of its ten-year run (and no, I don’t mean it was getting better toward the end) — and the crapfest that likes to call itself a “journey,” One Tree Hill, will be back. TANJ*, dammit.
Homefront. Murder One. Misfits of Science. Grosse Pointe. Freaks & Geeks. Undeclared. Firefly. Wonderfalls. Arrested Development. Justice League Unlimited. And now we can add Invasion and Everwood to the charnel heap.
TV… it was fun while it lasted. But more and more, it seems you’re actively doing your best to drive me away. It’s working.
On the upside… I guess I’ll have more time to read.
*TANJ: an acronym coined by Larry Niven in his Known Space books, meaning There Ain’t No Justice, a phrase appearing numerous times in the works of Robert A. Heinlein.
